UNITY — THE PATH TO SOMALILAND’S NATIONHOOD | PART THREE By Mohamed Farah Tahar.Hargeisa, Somaliland.
Somaliland’s continued progress depends on strengthening patriotism, promoting knowledge and competence, and building a society united by peace, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to the public good.
HARGEISA, Somaliland — Somaliland is a shared homeland whose people are connected by history, culture, and common aspirations for the future. Although citizens may differ in political opinions, regional backgrounds, and perspectives, they share a fundamental desire for peace, development, and prosperity.
Traditional values and clan relationships remain important elements of Somaliland’s social fabric. Individuals can take pride in their families, clans, and communities while maintaining an equally strong commitment to serving Somaliland as a whole.
“Clan identity is part of who we are, but nationhood is a responsibility we all share.”
Somaliland’s development requires greater recognition of education, competence, integrity, and meaningful public service. Public leadership offers an opportunity to improve people’s lives, strengthen institutions, and build trust between citizens and government.
Politics becomes more constructive when it is guided by ideas, practical policies, dialogue, and measurable achievements. Differences in political opinion can contribute to national progress when managed through mutual respect, peaceful competition, and a shared commitment to the public interest.
Traditional leaders, government institutions, religious scholars, academics, women, and young people all have important roles to play in strengthening social cohesion and national unity.
Drawing on my experience in traditional leadership, I believe that dialogue, patience, fairness, and mutual understanding remain essential foundations for lasting peace and cooperation.
Somaliland’s younger generation has a particularly important responsibility to combine modern education, professional skills, cultural values, and patriotism in contributing to the country’s future.
“Patriotism is more than words; it is responsibility, integrity, and meaningful service to society.”
A stronger Somaliland can be built when every citizen contributes according to their abilities, respects differences, and works toward common national goals.
Love your community and respect others. Value education and competence. Protect peace and strengthen unity.
Somaliland is our shared homeland, and its progress is our collective responsibility.
